Áform um frumvarp til laga um lýðskóla
Markmið með fyrirhuguðu frumvarpi til laga um lýðskóla er að skapa faglega umgjörð utan um starfsemi lýðskóla m.a. um hvaða skilyrði skólar þurfa að uppfylla til að fá viðurkenningu til að starfa undir heitinu lýðskóli. Ákveðið hefur verið að nota heitið „lýðskóli“ þar sem orðið „háskóli“ er lögverndað fyrir sambærilega starfsemi og myndi kalla á breytingar á lögum um háskóla nr. 63/2006.

As attachment didn't work, here it is in text: First of all, I would like to state my/our appreciation for this proposal. We have a few remarks regarding the following: 'Ad. D4) As we do recognise the need to formalise the degree of ‘education of a general character’ that has to be in the schools, it is important that this does not hinder the possibility for the schools to structure their program as they wish. At the Lunga School we usually have week long workshops within particular subjects (all of them also containing elements that are of more eternal character), which is taught intensively for a week and then the subjects and the schedule change the following week. We have very good experience with this workshop-based model and we believe that it’s important the the schools can continue to experiment with their formats so they can always make the format fit the content as best as possible. Ad. D6) Regarding the teaching language then we believe that it is important to allow the teaching to take place in several languages as that allows for the schools to hire teachers from around the world with specialised skills, as well as for intentional student mobility and exchange. At the Lunga School all teaching is carried out in English as we always have a very international group of both students and teachers, but even if you, as a school, have a student group that is purely Icelandic/nordic it should be possible to carry out workshops/teaching in f.ex. English. Ad. D8) Considering how the two schools that currently exist (Flateyri and LungA) have come into being and how they are able to exist in these small communities, it is important to allow for the schools to use, have and occupy buildings that are placed in the community-at-large without necessarily being one unit of buildings. This is crucial, both to make it much more feasible for other communities to consider the potential use of empty buildings for these purposes and will create much better conditions for more schools to exist, and for the existing ones to keep on existing. Ad. D9-g) Regarding the qualification of the staff, and especially guest teachers, it is important to remember that many of the teachers within various fields (both arts, music, sport, outdoor etc) have many years of experience without necessarily having the kind of formal training that is required for teaching in other schools. It is important that the individual schools are allowed to find the best teachers within their respective fields, regardless of the level of formal education that these people have. It must be the responsibility of the individual schools to support these teachers pedagogically and ensure the pedagogical integrity. /Jonatan Spejlborg Headmaster Lunga School
